Birth control is becoming more common and more widely used across the world than ever before. Unfortunately, the methods we use are massively outdated. So much so that in the past decade, there has been an unacceptable number of cases where women have had to deal with horrific side effects like excessive vaginal bleeding and device dislocation.
The Mirena IUD is one of these outdated birth control products, which is continued to be used in Tampa and throughout Florida. The company that makes the Mirena IUD is Bayer Pharmaceuticals, a company that has had numerous lawsuits filed against them for neglecting to inform patients of the side effects. Women from around Tampa and the rest of Florida have come forward to complain about damaged organs, fluid build-up in the skull, and uterine perforation after receiving a Mirena IUD. These are all devastating life long conditions with side effects that can ruin lives.
If you are a user of the Mirena IUD medical device and have suffered injuries, you should seek help from a personal injury lawyer who can protect your interests and seek compensation if necessary. With over 75 years of combined experience in dealing with cases just like yours in the Tampa and Florida area, The Law Place is here to help. Just call us on 941-444-4444 for a free consultation.
What Is a Mirena IUD?
The Mirena IUD is a small T-shaped device that is inserted into a woman’s uterus. Designed by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the device then releases a hormone called levonorgestrel. This lab-made progesterone hormone thickens the cervical mucus and allows the lining of the uterine wall to thin, this prevents sperm from reaching the eggs, and partially suppresses ovulation.
In 2000, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Mirena IUD as a birth control device and even approved it as a treatment for women that suffer from heavy periods. The contraceptive device is inserted in an invasive procedure and allows for a long period of protection. It was massively popular amongst women that did not want to take the pill every day.
Even with the thousands of complaints and the number of lawsuits being raised in Tampa against Bayer, the Mirena IUD is still available for use, and the only safety testing being done is due to be finished in 2021.
What Are the Potential Mirena IUD Side Effects?
There are some pretty serious side effects that are common with the Mirena IUD contraceptive device. They include:
- Migration of the device into other organs.
- A pregnancy that results in miscarriage.
- Ectopic pregnancy.
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Embedment in the uterine wall.
- Uterine wall perforation.
- Ovarian cysts.
- Infection or abdominal cavity.
- Irregular bleeding.
- Pseudotumor Cerebri (PTC) which can lead to permanent blindness, dizziness, blurred vision, ringing in ears, and migraines.
Because of the horrific side effects of the Mirena IUD, there have been a number of complicated surgeries undertaken to remove the devices from patients. In some of these cases, the IUD had moved from the uterus all the way up into the abdomen and diaphragm.
Examples of Mirena IUD Cases
Here are some of the lawsuits that have been raised against Bayer before.
Johnson V. Bayer
Mrs. Johnson lodged a lawsuit against the company when the Mirena device moved and lacerated the inside of her uterus. After she had the device removed by a surgeon, she managed to get pregnant only to have a miscarriage. After that, doctors theorized that Mrs. Johnson would most probably be infertile from that point on.
Everett-Carey V. Bayer
Katrina Everett-Carey was diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri. This happened very quickly after receiving a Mirena implant. She experienced headaches and blurry vision. She filed a lawsuit against Bayer, stating that they failed to properly test Mirena before placing it on the public market.
Women Want Bayer to Pay
The fact that Bayer knowingly allowed these horrid side effects to continue and still stated their device is safe is a terrible crime. Women who just wanted a simple birth control procedure have ended up with life-changing injuries, loss of earnings, loss of jobs, and pain and suffering. It isn’t right that these women should have to suffer for this, and that is why so many women are beginning to take action.
The Mirena device contains seriously dangerous design defects and should never have been approved for public use. Bayer knows about these risks and made the decision that the benefits outweighed the risks. They did not, however, state these risks alongside their product. That means that they have deceived every single woman who has had the procedure.

The Law Place
If you have suffered as a result of the Mirena IUD, you should contact a personal injury attorney immediately. Big pharmaceutical companies think they can get away with this kind of thing, but under Tampa law, they owe a duty of care to people who use their products. It is important that patients can feel confident and safe when their doctors recommend a procedure. When pharmaceutical companies try to hide side effects or mute statements from people who are dealing with problems as a result of their products, they unlawfully create unnecessary suffering. It is important that, as a victim, you have the right to receive the compensation you deserve for your injuries and fight for justice for yourself and other women. When you hold large pharmaceutical companies accountable, you are also protecting others from the same fate.
