Does the Affordable Care Act make it illegal to be without health insurance?
Answer: It’s not a crime to be without healthcare. In other words, you don’t go to jail. However, there are tax penalties if you don’t have healthcare under the Affordable Healthcare Act. The tax penalties have changed since 2014 when this came into effect. Initially it was a certain dollar figure for a single amount or single people, and then it would be an amount or percentage of their income. And then the families, they also have an amount or percentage of their income and those amounts and percentages have increased since 2014. I think they’re about 2% less this year, in 2015, for a person. You could either have a $325 fine or 2% of their income, depending upon the size of the family and how many people don’t have affordable, or don’t have healthcare.
